NAI Seeking Public Comment on Revised Code of Conduct

Today, following many one-on-one conversations and working sessions with dozens of NAI member companies, we announced the release of our revised Code of Conduct. With this official public release of the draft code, we continue to seek feedback from NAI member companies, but also from stakeholders outside of the NAI.

An Update on Compliance

Epic Media Group (the parent company to Epic Marketplace and Traffic Marketplace) has ceased operations for economic and financial reasons. The company has represented to the NAI that it is not currently engaged (and has not been engaged for the past few months) in online behavioral advertising or otherwise running campaigns across its network, and has no plans to resume operations.

Last week, Robert Gellman published his assessment of the NAI’s 2011 Annual Compliance Report. As always, the NAI welcomes an open dialogue with our members, consumers, and the advocacy community. The NAI is premised on the notion that users are entitled to transparency and choice with respect to the collection and use of data for online behavioral advertising and related purposes. While we believe that more relevant ads that support free Web content and services provide myriad benefits to users, we also believe that transparency about the practices that make such benefits possible is crucial.

NAI Releases Results of 2011 Compliance Review

Today, the NAI released its 2011 Annual Compliance Report, the third annual report published under the 2008 NAI Code of Conduct. The results of our 2011 annual review are encouraging. Overall, our member companies continue to meet the obligations of the NAI Code and to adopt best practices even where not required by the Code. Here, we summarize a few key findings:

NAI Files Comments on Preliminary FTC Staff Privacy Report

The NAI today filed comments on the FTC Staff’s Preliminary Report, Protecting Consumer Privacy in an Era of Rapid Change: A Proposed Framework for Businesses and Policymakers. In its report, FTC Staff presented a proposed framework addressing commercial use of consumer data, and asked for comment to help guide further development and refinement of its proposal.

NAI Comments on Department of Commerce Internet Inquiry

The Department of Commerce’s Internet Policy Task Force recently initiated a comprehensive review of the nexus between privacy and innovation in the Internet economy, seeking public comment from all Internet stakeholders. The Department intends to analyze the comments received and then issue a report that will contribute to the Administration’s domestic policy and international engagement in the area of Internet commerce.
